What is a PEP

A PEP (Product Environmental Profile) is an EPD-type environmental declaration specifically designed for electrical, electronic and HVAC products and equipment.

An EPD (Environmental Product Declaration) is a standardised environmental declaration that provides transparent and verified details of a product’s environmental performance throughout its entire life cycle.

In accordance with the international standard ISO 14025, it is based on a multi-criteria Life-Cycle Assessment (LCA) and on methodological rules set out at sector level.

The PEP is a recognised tool for comparing data, supporting ecodesign initiatives and meeting the reporting requirements of international markets.

The PEP in detail

The PEP (Product Environmental Profile) is:

  • The environmental identity card for electrical, electronic or HVAC equipment,
  • An environmental declaration process compliant with current standards (ISO 14025, 14040, 14044, EN 50693 and EN 63366),
  • A declaration verified by an independent third party and recognised internationally.

Based on the results of the Life-Cycle Assessment (LCA), it provides reliable, standardised data on a product’s environmental impact throughout its entire life cycle – raw materials, manufacture, transport, distribution, product use and end-of-life.

A PEP is valid for five years and offers a unique document for helping professionals make responsible and sustainable decisions.

PEP Ecopassport® is the benchmark international programme for declaring the environmental impacts of electrical, electronic and HVAC equipment.

How to make a PEP through the PEP Ecopassport® programme

01.

Collect and assess environmental data, using the LCA (Life-Cycle Assessment) method.

02.

Draft the declaration in accordance with the technical and editorial rules of the PCR (Product Category Rules) and PSR (Product Specific Rules) programme.

03.

Have the declaration validated by a review panel to ensure compliance with the applicable reference standards.

04.

Have the declaration verified by an accredited independent verifier.

05.

Publish and register the PEP in the programme database.

Why choose PEP Ecopassport®?

The credibility and legitimacy of PEP Ecopassport® are based on clear and distinctive commitments:

  • The only programme specific to electrical and electronic (EEE) and HVAC equipment (heating, ventilation and air-conditioning) equipment, making it the most technically advanced with regard to its methodological framework;
  • A programme run by a non-profit association, focused on the relevance and robustness of the methodological frameworks rather than profit maximisation;
  • The longest-established operator programme, supported by major manufacturers (Schneider Electric, Somfy, Mitsubishi Electric, etc.);
  • Worldwide recognition, based on compliance with ISO and EN standards, as well as on Mutual Recognition Agreements (MRA).

Institutional recognition and regulatory framework

INIES / RE2020

The PEP Ecopassport® programme is accredited by the French Ministry of Housing (DHUP) to allow the use of PEP declarations in life-cycle assessments of buildings carried out under RE2020 regulations.

PEP data are compiled in accordance with specific supplementary rules and are automatically transmitted to the INIES database, to ensure they are included in the assessment of new-build environmental performance.
